New York-based photographer Flo Ngala captured portraits of black men protesting in New York City last week. “What we’ve seen occur in the past few days in our country has shown me now more than ever that there is power in togetherness and in the fight for justice,” she says. “Due to spending a few days marching, I now hear the echoes of thousands in my head screaming ‘I Can’t Breathe,’ and I hope that echo lasts for as many months and years as it needs to until every person who doesn’t get it, gets it.” Head to the link in our bio to see more photos. In honor of would have been Prince’s birthday yesterday — and protests around the country over the police killing of George Floyd — the Prince estate released a new lyric video for “Baltimore.” The Estate also released a handwritten note from the musician: “Nothing more ugly in the whole wide world than intolerance [between] black, white, red, yellow, boy or girl. Intolerance.” Tap the link in our bio to watch the video.

"Pop music is black music." Black artists, managers, and executives are fighting racism in the music industry — and they say it's going to take more than donations to fix. “We’re not looking for these corporations to change everything in a day,” says one manager. “We’re looking for them to say, ‘We’re wrong, we don’t make money without the black community, here’s a fund we set aside to utilize as you see fit.” Click the link in our bio to read how racism shapes the music industry.

This is Iyanna Dior. She was beaten by a mob in Minneapolis. Fortunately, she is still alive. Black trans women are brutally murdered each year. Often, their deaths are not properly investigated by local police forces. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 26 transgender or gender non-conforming people were violently killed in 2019 alone, with the vast majority of the victims being black transgender women. #SayHerName (Photograph courtesy of Facebook)

Activists are demanding cities ‘defund the police.’ But what does that mean? Defunding the police does not mean stripping a department entirely of its budget, or abolishing it altogether. It’s just about scaling police budgets back and reallocating those resources to other agencies, says Lynda Garcia, policing campaign director at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.
