Climate change is ushering in a new pandemic era.

Through intensive agriculture, habitat destruction, and rising temperatures, we are forcing creatures to live by the cardinal rule of the climate crisis: adapt or die. For many animals, that means migrating to more hospitable environments. During this wild exodus, these animals are likely to bump into new animals and humans they have never crossed paths with before. The vast majority of the new infectious diseases that have emerged in recent decades have come from these zoonotic pathogens, as they are called, with bats, mosquitoes, and ticks being among the most competent carriers of new viruses. When they jump to humans, we get pandemics like Covid-19. What’s next?

Iconic musical hooks can come in many forms: a shredding guitar solo, a wordless chant, a sultry sax riff, or even a crafty bit of whistling. But it’s safe to say that no other drum fill has ever wormed its way as deeply into the popular consciousness as Phil Collins’ descending 10-note tom-tom break on “In the Air Tonight.”

From a live version featuring Collins’ son Nic to a nonsensical video of a deer tripping over a slide, tap the link in our bio for a primer on the many ways the drummer’s indelible lead-in has been heard over the years.

Less than a month after its premiere, Netflix has announced the renewal of Bridgerton, the Shonda Rhimes-produced romance series, for a second season.

Per a letter from Lady Whistledown — a high-society gossip writer narrated by Julie Andrews — the series will go into production this spring. “The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honor to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season,” she writes. “I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion. This author has been reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season. I will have my pen ready to report on any and all of his romantic activities.”

In 2017, as a freshman at Harvard, Amanda Gorman was named the first-ever United States Youth Poet Laureate. Because no one had defined the role before her, she molded it herself. So between delivering keynote speeches and college coursework, “I went on this tour around the U.S. — it was just me and a lot of meetings in rooms and museums, trying to learn as much as possible.” She funneled that into her poetry: Using a striking combination of autobiography and historical imagery — from the first image of the Earth from space to scenes of the Jim Crow South — her poetry reads in part like a free-form dissertation. “I do so much research that people will never see,” she says. “I’ll return to a moment in history — look to the past to try to construct a poem about our future.”
