It’s been nearly a year since Covid-19 essentially shut down concert tours — the financial backbone of most working musicians – in the United States and beyond. As a result, thousands of musicians and touring professionals, many of whom work as nonunion independent contractors, are still out of work and struggling to make ends meet during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

With no end in sight and no firm forecast for a return to normal touring in the future, they need more help than ever.

Last spring, at just 19 years old, Koffee won the Best Reggae Album Grammy for her 2019 EP, Rapture, making history as the first woman and the youngest artist ever to take home that award.

For her upcoming debut LP, she wants to focus on the idea of unity. “I want to speak of a solution and of a way that we can come together and get along, even when things are going wrong,” she says. “Positivity is definitely a theme. It will be a very interesting twist for people who knew my music before, and also for people who will discover me. I think it will be really awesome.”

The first African American woman to win a Nobel prize, Toni Morrison was known for her unflinching and relentlessly lyrical evocation of the black American experience, in all its brutality and beauty. Born Chloe Ardella Wofford on February 18th, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, Morrison was perhaps best known for her master work, 'Beloved,' which is widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best, books about American slavery, and was later adapted into a film produced by and starring Oprah Winfrey. But although 'Beloved' was probably Morrison’s most widely read work, it is not always considered her most stylistically significant or groundbreaking work (that honor usually goes to 'Song of Solomon') nor is it arguably her most personal ('The Bluest Eye'). Nor were novels the only books that Morrison wrote: she dabbled in many different genres, writing children’s books and essays well into her later years.

Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing talk show host who gleefully stoked division in America and helped polarize our national politics, died Wednesday at the age of 70. The cause of death was lung cancer. His wife, Kathryn, confirmed the host’s death on Facebook.

Over three decades on the national airwaves, Limbaugh promoted profoundly offensive ideas and trafficked in bigotry and cruelty, often referring to feminists as “feminazis”; long calling AIDS “the Rock Hudson disease”; and once observing that the NFL “looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons.” Following his cancer diagnosis, he received the presidential medal of freedom from Donald Trump during the 2020 State of the Union, in recognition of what Trump called Limbaugh’s “tireless devotion to our country.”

Ten years ago today, the members of Odd Future made their late-night TV debut. Tyler, the Creator was 19 years old, Hodgy Beats about 16 months older, and Earl Sweatshirt was still sequestered in Samoa.

For a generation weaned on the blog era, the set was an instant classic, on par with Elvis Costello on SNL or the Foo Fighters on Letterman.

It was the chaotic energy of the internet, manifested IRL. Which is why nobody was prepared for Odd Future to make the jump to TV, at the time still an arbiter of mainstream success. This mysterious L.A. collective, equipped with nothing but a handful of free MP3s and a vaguely sinister aura, would soon be introduced to meemaws and papas all over America.
