‘Time’ director Garrett Bradley takes us inside her intimate look at the effects of incarceration on one family — and reveals what she plans to do next. The Oscar-nominated documentary follows a black family living in the shadow of incarceration. At the center of that family is Sibil Richardson, known as Fox Rich, whose husband, Robert, is serving a 60-year sentence for a crime the two of them committed when they were young, newly married, and desperate. The film is a stunning, surprising mix of present-tense footage (filmed by Bradley and others) and video diaries Rich has been compiling over the course of 21 years — footage shot to show Robert all that he’s missing of his wife and kids while in prison. Lauryn Hill for Rolling Stone, February 18th, 1999. “Music is about to change. I think now people feel a little more comfortable playing with the parameters. Writing more intensely. I think we [D’Angelo and herself] have helped to make people less afraid. There are a lot of young people who will be given more leeway. People can’t really hear potential. There’s a lot of people who need to hear a ready-made, instant-meal, TV-dinner-type thing – where you just put it in the microphone – the microwave, as opposed to potential.” Revisit the cover story, written by Touré, at the link in bio. Spice Girls for Rolling Stone, July 10, 1997. “We’ve just got every element we need. I’m better at melodies, but I’m terrible with lyrics. Geri’s brilliant with lyrics. Emma’s great with harmonies. Mel [B] always comes up with hooks. And Victoria’s great with melody as well. We never get stuck.” — Mel C Revisit the cover story, written by Chris Heath, at the link in bio. Whitney Houston for Rolling Stone, June 10th, 1993. “I wanted to be a teacher. I love children, so I wanted to deal with children. Then I wanted to be a veterinarian. But by the age of ten or eleven, when I opened my mouth and said, ‘Oh, God, what’s this?’ I kind of knew teaching and being a veterinarian were gonna have to wait. What’s in your soul is in your soul.” Revisit the cover story, written by Anthony DeCurtis, at the link in bio.
