Artists from Africa are rapidly reshaping the sound and texture of pop music — and Afrobeats just had its biggest year. We talked to movers and shakers across the scene on the makings of this moment. “The narrative has started changing,” says DJ Neptune, who has been pushing Afrobeats for 15 years. “I land in Atlanta, and as I am heading home I am hearing a Davido song playing on V103. It’s almost impossible to say you don’t know [of] Afrobeats.” Afrobeats’ expansion brings to mind the explosion of hip-hop in the Eighties and Nineties. “What makes hip-hop great is not that it is recognized as a genre, it is also recognized as a culture,” says Fireboy DML. “Afrobeats is a culture too."
