On Friday, a Minnesota judge sentenced white former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, the black, unarmed father of five whose neck Chauvin pressed his knee into for nine-and-a-half minutes on May 25, 2020. The killing sparked weeks of worldwide protests against police brutality and institutionalized racism. Prior to the sentencing, Floyd’s young daughter, his nephew, and two of his brothers addressed Chauvin and the court. Floyd’s younger brother Philonise said he hasn’t slept well since Floyd’s killing, but that hasn’t stopped him from advocating for justice to be served. “I’ve been lifting my voice tirelessly every day so that George’s death would not be in vain,” he said, and asked the judge to hand down the maximum penalty. “My family and I have been given a life sentence. We’ll never be able to get George back.” Tap the link in our bio to read more. The ruling came hours after the court rejected Chauvin’s request for a new trial.

This week CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said adult deaths from Covid-19 are “at this point entirely preventable” due to the effectiveness of vaccines. And a new analysis from the AP confirms what Walensky said. According to the analysis of government data from May, released on Thursday, out of the 18,000 Covid-19 deaths during the month, approximately 150 were fully vaccinated people. That comes out to 0.8 percent, or an average of five deaths per day out of more than 200 average daily deaths. At the height of the pandemic in January of this year, average daily deaths were above 3,400 per day. Additionally, fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 hospitalized with the virus (0.1 percent). According to CDC data, around 63 percent of eligible Americans have gotten at least one dose of a vaccine. But completing both rounds of two-dose vaccines like Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna is crucial to have the best protection against Covid-19, especially with the new variants that are spreading. Beebo Russell did the unthinkable when he stole a passenger plane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. During harrowing testimony, Britney Spears described past 13 years under her father Jamie Spears’ control. Spears, who turns 40 this year, has been in a conservatorship for 13 years, which is unprecedented for someone so young. Her father has been in charge of the conservatorship since the beginning and now co-manages her $60 million fortune along with a wealth management company, the latter of which was at his daughter’s request. In a new report by The New York Times, previously sealed court records revealed that the pop star has voiced concerns for her father’s fitness to be in charge of her assets along with requests for other changes to the arrangement. Primary Day in New York City is officially over, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams leads in first-place votes cast in the race for the Democratic nomination for mayor. It isn’t particularly close, either. Adams has received around 31.5 percent of the first-place votes, with over 95 percent of in-person votes reported. Maya Wiley and Kathryn Garcia are in second and third with around 22 and 19 percent of the vote, respectively. Andrew Yang rounds out the top four with around 11.5 percent, nearly 20 points behind Adams. Scott Stringer (~5), Dianne Morales (~2.8), Ray Maguire (~2.3), and Shaun Donovan (~2.1) are the other candidates to receive more than 1 percent of first-place votes. The results Tuesday night, which are unofficial, don’t mean Adams is going to be the nominee. He has received less than 50 percent of the vote required to win a ranked-choice election, which means an automatic recount will now be conducted. The last place candidate will be eliminated, with all of their votes going to whomever was ranked next on those ballots. The process will continue until one candidate surpasses the 50-percent threshold. The winner will not be announced until July 12th at the earliest, according to the Board of Elections. Lucy Dacus' 'Home Video' is her greatest work yet — a cohesive and poignant collection of tales from her teenage years in Richmond, Virginia. These stories are woven like a quilt, with several dark patches reminiscent of her hero Bruce Springsteen’s 'The River.' Dacus navigates through early romances, contemplates religion, and fiercely protects her friends — all with wide-eyed maturity and small-town realness. Although these are past recollections, she places them into the present, like retrieving moments from a diary and bravely re-enacting them in front of a crowd. It’s the kind of sharp storytelling songwriters spend a lifetime trying to accomplish, and yet Dacus — who is also a member of the acclaimed supergroup Boygenius, alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker — is doing it at just 26 years old.
