Frank Ocean has unveiled Homer, a luxury goods line that launched this week in New York.â â The first collection from the company features high-end jewelry pieces and silk scarves, all made in Italy with diamonds crafted from a state-of-the-art lab in the United States. A press release states the designs were inspired by âchildhood obsessionsâ and âheritage as a fantasy.â The name Homer was chosen to represent âcarving history into stone.ââ â Tap the link in our bio to read more.â â Photo: AndraĚs Ladocsi
For the past several weeks, Kanye West has turned a hastily assembled studio inside of a sprawling sports arena into the worldâs biggest open critique. 'Donda,' the 21-time Grammy winnerâs 10th studio album, remains absent from DSPs but the world has been privy to the process of its creation in unprecedented ways. Following his July 23rd event at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Kanye has been holed up in the arena making alterations to the long-delayed album. Anticipation, meanwhile, has bubbled. Westâs complicated career seems at a pivotal moment. The rapper has, in recent years, taken on an ecclesiastical bent. Last night, as the dome of the stadium opened, young people either circled West or crawled to him like devoted parishioners. Had the clouds rained on the heart of Atlanta that evening, Kanye West, like Noah, might have had himself his very own ark.â â âDondaâ still isnât available on streaming platforms, but after his most recent listening event, itâs apparent that heâs getting closer. Health officials are investigating Covid-19 outbreaks tied to two recent outdoor music festivals in Michigan and Oregon, raising new concerns about the safety of events with tightly packed crowds, even outside, as live music surges back and the more transmissible Delta variant spreads. Officials in Michigan say at least 96 cases can be traced to the Faster Horses Festival, which took place in Brooklyn, Michigan, from July 16th to 18th, while authorities in Oregon are looking at 62 cases tied to July 10thâs Pendleton Whisky Music Fest in Pendleton, Oregon. In Michigan, one person considered a âsecondary caseâ â infected by someone who contracted Covid at Faster Horses â is hospitalized. Neither event required attendees to be vaccinated.â â âThese events are the warning shot across the bow,â says Dr. Emily Landon, executive medical director for infection prevention and control at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She also points to the numerous cases reportedly tied to Julyâs Verknipt Festival in the Netherlands, which was also held outdoors. âI think weâre finding it does matter what you do outdoors,â Landon adds. âAnd even though people are vaccinated, it looks like we may need to be more careful with super-crowded events.ââ â Tap the link in our bio to read more.
Whether you find yourself the victim of some questionable, unearthed tweets or on the wrong side of a cultural debate, an Apple Notes apology is always at the ready for Instagram. By now no one really takes those sorry beg-pardons seriously, but it shows that the cancel-wary celeb is at least trying to make amends. Then thereâs DaBaby, sometime emcee and architect of the be-all, end-all of celebrity non-apologies. After his clusterfuck of faux-pologies, DaBabyâs left those in the queer community no choice but to demand dollars.â â Read more from Lester Fabian Brathwaite at the link in our bio.â â Photo: Photo Illustration by Joe Rodriguez. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Aaliyahâs eponymous album and her estate has released a statement regarding âunauthorized projectsâ that have appeared to pop up during the landmark moment, and to âpreempt the inevitable attacks on our character by all the individuals who have emerged from the shadows to leech off of Aaliyahâs lifeâs work.ââ â âProtecting Aaliyahâs legacy is, and will always be, our focus. For 20 years we have battled behind the scenes, enduring shadowy tactics of deception with unauthorized projects targeted to tarnish,â the singerâs estate wrote. âWe have always been confused as to why there is such a tenacity in causing more pain alongside what we already have to cope with for the rest of our lives.â â âNow, in this 20th year, this unscrupulous endeavor to release Aaliyahâs music without any transparency or full accounting to the estate compels our hearts to express a word â forgiveness.ââ â The statement confused fans, who commented both on Twitter and Instagram about its vagueness and pleaded that her music be made available. While the estate does not cite any specifics, it appears it could be alluding to a couple of recently revealed unauthorized projects. A rep for the estate didnât not immediately respond to Rolling Stoneâs request for further clarification.â â On Wednesday, new website aaliyahiscoming.com launched, as 'The Detroit News' reports, which appears to be the primary impetus to what prompted the estateâs statement. After providing an email to the site, it leads to several social media accounts for Blackground Records, Aaliyahâs record label, with a 2.0 appendage. The label was founded by her uncle and former manager Barry Hankerson, who controls the master recordings of her music, with the exception of her 1994 debut LP 'Age Ainât Nothing But a Number.' Aaliyahâs debut is her only LP that is currently available to stream.â â Tap the link in our bio to read more.â â Photo: Jim Cooper/AP @apnews
New York City will start requiring people to show proof of vaccination for indoor activities like attending concerts, dining inside, or going to the gym, 'The New York Times' reports.â â Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the new rules Tuesday, August 3rd, saying the program will begin later this month and enforcement will begin in mid-September. Those wishing to partake in indoor activities will need to show their paper vaccination cards, or use digital vax passports like New York Stateâs Excelsior app, or a new NYC-specific app, âKey to NYC Pass.ââ â NYCâs proof of vaccine mandate is similar to rules issued recently in France and Italy, but NYC is believed to be the first place in the United States to adopt such measures. Other major cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. have, however, recently reinstated indoor mask mandates as the Delta variant of Covid-19 continues to spread.â â The point of the mandate appears to be to encourage more people to get vaccinated against Covid-19, with de Blasio saying during a press conference that âvaccination has made the differenceâ in fighting Covid-19 and the Delta variant. âThis is the whole ballgame, everyone.ââ â Tap the link in our bio to read more.
Harry Bensonâs latest book, titled 'Paul' (out now from Taschen), focuses on his iconic images of Paul McCartney. The Scottish photographer first stepped into Maccaâs world in 1964, when he was a photojournalist working on Londonâs Fleet Street. He was about to depart for Africa on assignment when his editor called with a change of plans: heâd fly to Paris instead to capture the Beatles, and he wasnât too happy about it.â â âYou think of yourself as a foreign correspondent, a big shot,â he says. âI didnât want to do a new rock group.â But his perception of the band drastically changed when he watched them perform (he even ended up traveling with them on their famous trip to America that same year). âThey were terrific,â he says. âI said to myself, âI was on the right story.âââ â Tap the link in our bio to see more photos from 'Paul.'â â Photos: Harry Benson/Courtesy of TASCHEN
When we all wake up, where do we go? Billie Eilish opened her eyes in 2019 to find herself the biggest sensation in pop music, when she was still just a kid on the edge of seventeen. Her blockbuster debut album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' made her an overnight legend, the kind who accepts her Grammy awards from Smokey Robinson and Ringo Starr. She was suddenly the worldâs most high-profile teen, the object of strangersâ gazes, a target for mind-blowing amounts of misogyny. The homemade bedroom tunes she cooked up with her brother Finneas were recognized as instant classics, even when Billie was baring the Invisalign of her soul.â â Her excellent sophomore album 'Happier Than Ever' feels downright heroic, the work of an artist refusing to stay still. Absolutely nobody was out here saying Billie Eilish needed to push even harder and get even better â nobody but Billie. Itâs a dark, painful, confessional album where sheâs choosing not to settle into the role of Americaâs beloved kooky kid sister.â â Read our review at the link in bio.â â Photo: Kelia Anne MacCluskey
DaBaby apologized to the LGBTQ+ community after making homophobic remarks and comments about HIV/AIDS victims at Rolling Loud Miami.â â The rapper posted the statement Monday, August 2nd, on Instagram. âI want to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made,â he said. âAgain, I apologize for my misinformed comments about HIV/AIDS and I know education on this is important.ââ â DaBabyâs statement came after he was dropped from two more major festivals: Governors Ball in New York City and Day N Vegas in Las Vegas. He was also bumped from Lollapalooza at the last minute, and heâs no longer playing the Parklife Festival in Manchester, England this September. On top of losing those shows, DaBaby has drawn criticism from Questlove, Elton John, Madonna, and Dua Lipa, who first issued a statement and then reportedly removed their âLevitatingâ remix from streaming service playlists.â â Tap the link in our bio to read more.
At her #Olympics debut in 1984, track-and-field legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee was favored to win gold in the heptathlon but was struggling with her recovery from a recent hamstring injury. Not with the muscle â sheâd healed physically â but in her head. She couldnât stop worrying about the injury recurring. She says a wrap her physiotherapist put on her made it worse because, âIn my mind it meant something must be wrong.â Ultimately, she blamed her mental state for causing her to perform below her best abilities, earning silver that year instead of gold. âIt caused me to doubt my coaches, doubt myself. No matter how much they were telling me my leg was OK, I just didnât believe it,â she says. âEvery time I got into the event, Iâd anticipate a pain that wasnât there. And in between the events I was supposed to replace my fluids, I was supposed to be eating. But I was so wrapped up in my leg. I didnât perform well.ââ â When Joyner-Kersee heard about Simone Biles withdrawing from the womenâs gymnastics team final because she wasnât âin the right headspace,â she felt admiration for her. âShe was brave enough to even speak up and not to give in to the pressures of âIâm Simone Biles; Iâm supposed to do this,ââ she says. (Biles later announced she would be returning to the individual final for the balance beam.)â â Things were different during Joyner-Kerseeâs own career in the Eighties and Nineties, during which she won six medals, including two golds in record-setting heptathlon performances and one gold for long jump. In 1999, she was named âGreatest Female Athlete of the 20th Centuryâ by 'Sports Illustrated.' âWhen I was coming up, you said anything about mental health theyâd say, âOh you weak, something wrong with you,ââ she says. âWe [only] talked about our mental health as far as being tough. When everything is going well, you donât think about the other tools that you need to navigate when things are not going well.ââ â Tap the link in our bio to read more.â â Photo: Focus on Sport/Getty Images
