In a world where everyone’s busy with his or her work, it becomes a necessity to pamper oneself. Even machines need some repairing to work smoothly. Similarly, regular pampering is a must to keep you fresh. And finding a salon that has it all is one heck of a task. Tangerine is “the one stop destination” for all your worries. When it comes to grooming, there’s nothing that the team cannot do. Here’s a candid conversation with the brain behind the brand, Natasha
· Tell me something about yourself?
I was put in a boarding school at a very small age. After my school, I went to Symbiosis for pursuing fashion communication. My specification subject was fashion styling because of which I got to work with a lot of people like Elle India, Gautam Kalra, Malini Banerjee and many more. I gained a lot of experience working with them. Then I came back to Jaipur. I was on a salon hunt as I was always out. And staying at places like Bombay and Delhi, the salon out there are pretty much epic. I couldn’t find the same level of salon here. I wasn’t satisfied. That’s when I thought that I should come up with a salon. Whatever I’ve studied was into fashion, so I thought of blending the two worlds together. That’s how Tangerine was invented.
· How is Tangerine different and unique from other salons?
Tangerine believes in quality. Usually, the customers aren’t sure as to what product is being applied on them, as there is a lot of scope to save money with the help of mixing and matching. But I cannot do this, as I believe that we are sort of educating a client through our services. What’s the point of cheating them when they won’t like your service? Also, my staff is very much educated. The passion that we have shows in the work that we do.
· How do you hire your staff and stylists?
I don’t generally look for a specific education qualification criteria. The main judgment is on the basis of their nature. When you’re a nice person, it reflects in your work automatically. For me, if someone’s passionate and hardworking but doesn’t have a lot of experience has much more capability than someone with experience and overconfidence. The person with less experience will start fresh, and will listen. And this way, it becomes quite easier to educate them.
· How long have you owned Tangerine?
It has been more than three years since Tangerine started, but I have been in this business from the past 8-9 years.
· What are the perks of owning your own business?
The freedom of running it the way you want is the best thing about owning your own business.
· What were the challenges that you initially faced and how did you overcome them?
The most difficult thing is to retain a staff in Jaipur. A lot of chains of big salon are opening in the city. But I don’t really bother myself with all the stress of coping with the competition. And with God’s grace we’ve been quite well with our services. So, if I have a good staff, I am able to deliver you better. I am very positive about my work. That’s why I focus more on a staff member’s nature and loyalty.
· How was the feeling when you attended your first client?
My speed was slightly affected and that was probably because I was nervous. There were various thoughts running down my head but I managed to deliver good results, and that’s what mattered in the end.
· How do you deal with a customer who is cribby?
Honestly, all of us are from good families. And the customers who generally attend my salon are well educated people. And when they start throwing tantrums, it isn’t good. Paying someone doesn’t really mean that you own that person. For me, labour dignity matters a lot. I do not like anybody talking to my staff rudely. If they do, I do not entertain them at all. Fortunately, I have only come across a few of such cases.
· What advice would you give to someone who’d want to own their own business one day
I feel whatever you do in life, you need to be passionate about it and have a lot of knowledge about the same. You need to know the gist of anything you do before enrolling into it. If you aren’t well aware of your business, how is it possible to guide your staff? You should put your heart and soul into whatever you do.
