Anil Kapoor and Anees Bazmee seem to be a match made in both heaven and hell. Heaven because their quondam collaborations- No Entry (2005), Welcome (2007) and Welcome Back (2015) continue to be my fondest guilty pleasures. Hell because they also teamed up to deliver the duff No Problem (2010).
Their new film, Mubarakan, also staring Arjun Kapoor (two of them), Ileana D’Cruz (looking dour here as well) and Athiya Shetty, is somewhat stuck in between.
As what the trailer connotes, it’s a film about a big-fat Punjabi family living in London. Frenzy erupts when the two leading ladies are mistaken to be the fiancées of the wrong Arjun Kapoors- Charan Singh, the Sardar, and Karan Singh, the suave.
Anil Kapoor, meanwhile, gets the only funny joke in this 2 min and 48 second trailer- “Is Baar Christmas 25 ko hai?” Sounds lame but I laughed.
We have a palette of some fine actors like Pawan Malhotra and Ratna Pathak, and I sincerely hope they aren’t squandered amidst a sea of puerile humor and outlandish situations.
My biggest concern is the platitudinous portrayal of the Sikh community in Bollywood. Take a Sardar, make him a dim-witted simpleton and overload his character with a barrage of caricatures. The only two times we got true-blue flesh and blood Sikh characters in mainstream Hindi films were Rocket Singh- Salesman Of The Year (2009) and Udta Punjab (2016).
Although, I’m prepared to have a few laughs on the 28th of July, I also know it’ll all be guilty pleasure stuff, like most of Bazmee’s films.
