From rough and tough polo grounds to elegant ballroom hall, Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh took a new field on at the 25th annual Bal des Debutantes in Paris on Saturday.

The suave polo player of international repute escorted Ava Phillippe, the teenage daughter of actress Reese Witherspoon, who has become suddenly the talk of the internet.

The duo then took to the dance floor for the first waltz, where Phillippe twirled to a song from hit film La La Land as other debutantes watched on.

A polo playing acquaintance of Prince William, Phillippe’s date Padmanabh Singh’s presence at Le Bal has attracted press attention in Paris. Known to friends as “Pacho,” he’s a member of India’s national polo team — who told journalists he’d only asked friends to show him the steps for the waltz (the ball’s traditional opening dance) in the past few weeks

Also called ‘le Bal’, the event is the traditional “coming out” of 20 boys and 20 girls from across a dozen nationalities. The event was first held in 1992. Influential families across arts, politics, business and take part in the event which is an evening of couture, cavaliers, and fundraising.

The other participants from India were Padmanabh Singh’s sister Princess Gauravi Kumari, Ananya Pandey, daughter of Bollywood star Chunkey Pandey, along with her cousin Ahaan Panday.
