Dandiya Fun at St. Xavier’s College Jaipur

Written by Shruti Misra

The festival of Navratri is just around the corner.  Navaratri in Sanskrit means nine nights – Nava meaning nine and Ratri meaning night.  It celebrates Hindu Goddesses such as Shakti, Durga, Amba, Annapoorna Devi, Sarvamangala, Bhairavi, Chandika, Lalita, Bhavani, Mookambika and Kali and welcomes the seasons of Spring and Autumn.

Navratri is known for its colourful and extravagant Dandiya and Garba celebrations during the nine days of Navaratri.  Garba is a kind of a dance that is performed in a circle, representing the cycle of time that is a belief in Hinduism. The dance is performed around a clay lantern that people dance around. The energy that emanates from the clay lantern is believed to reside in each and every human being that performs this dance. While in Dandiya men and women dance in two circles, with sticks in their hands.

Soak in the spirit of Navratri by participating in the dandiya nights celebrated at the Saint Xavier’s College Jaipur on the 13th of October 2018 from 5:00 pm at the Saint Xavier’s college, Hathroi campus.
