Wedding bells are ringing for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — The Clarence House has spoken!
An official announcement by the Kensington Palace reads: “His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place in spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
“His Royal Highness and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents. The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.”
They posed for photographs outside Kensington Palace, with Prince Harry saying he was “thrilled” and it had been a romantic proposal.
A smiling Ms Markle, wearing a white belted coat, held Harry’s hand as they appeared briefly for the press at the palace’s Sunken Garden, and showed off her diamond engagement ring.
Asked by a reporter when he knew Ms Markle “was the one”, Prince Harry said: “The very first time we met”.
Ms Markle said she was “so very happy, thank you”.
Kensington Palace said Ms Markle’s engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry and features two diamonds which belong to his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
At the centre of the ring is a diamond from Botswana, a country the couple has spent time together over the last year and a half. The band is made from gold.
The couple, who have been dating since the summer of 2016, met through mutual friends in London. In September 2017, Markle spoke publicly about her relationship for the first time, telling Vanity Fair: “We’re two people who are really happy and in love”.
Announcing his son’s news on Twitter, Prince Charles also said he was “thrilled”, adding that Ms Markle’s parents had given their blessing.
Only the Queen and “other close members of his family” initially knew of the engagement, which took place in London, Prince Charles said.
